There are two different forms of property ownership in the UK- freehold and leasehold.
Freehold means you own the building and the land outright. You own the ‘title absolute’ and your name is in the land registry as freeholder.
Leasehold means you lease the property for a set number of years, however somebody else is the freeholder. The lease is usually for a term of 90 years or more, but it can be for as long 999 years or as short as 40 years.
Leaseholders tend to pay maintenance fees or a service charge as well as a ground rent and may have to comply with various restrictions put in place by the freeholder when the lease was first granted.
