Astle Paterson has a rich history dating back to 1982 when Martin Astle first opened the Burton on Trent branch of the law practice under the name Bakewells. Jean Paterson joined in 1983.
Over the years, the firm has gained a reputation as a leading practice in family law, under the guidance of Martin Astle, who had been practising law since 1963, and Jean Paterson, who built up a strong commercial team. In 1996, Bakewells moved to Horninglow Street, Burton on Trent. The firm continued to thrive and became a leading law firm in the area. On 1st June 2007, Bakewells Solicitors officially changed its name to Astle Paterson Ltd.
In 2012, Astle Paterson merged with OMW Solicitors, and in 2017 merged with Smith Woodcock Solicitors. On 1st April 2022, Astle Paterson merged with Samble Burton & Worth Solicitors, cementing its place as one of the most respected and successful law firms in the region.
Martin Astle sadly passed away on 1st January 2023. He was a prominent figure in the legal community of Burton on Trent, and his legacy lives on at Astle Paterson.
Martin was born a Burtonian in 1939. He was the only son of Len Astle, a legendary local garage owner. After school and Nottingham University he joined Derby solicitors Taylor Simpson and Moseley as an articled clerk. After qualifying in 1963 Martin moved to J H Powell & Co. and then to Bakewells in Derby where he became a partner.
Martin was known for his expertise in family law. He was one of the longest-practising solicitors in the country. It’s estimated he worked on over 3000 divorces. He was also a Notary Public, a prestigious appointment of which he was justifiably proud.
Martin was deeply involved in the social life of Burton. He served as an honorary legal advisor to many local organisations. His dedication to the community and commitment to providing expert legal advice will always be remembered at Astle Paterson.
