Paul Walters, family law solicitor at Astle Paterson for 12 years, has now taken retirement. We wish Paul all the best in his next adventure.
Paul’s abundance of legal knowledge, friendly personality and light-hearted nature willĀ be deeply missed by everyone here at Astle Paterson.
Paul discussed his time at Astle Paterson, while reminiscing about how he started his legal career:
My time working at Astle Paterson has been my happiest throughout the whole of my professional career.
Because I am not a partner here, I can do all the things I love and want to do rather than the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.
Paul will be the first to admit his legal career got off to a rocky start! Recalling his fourth day on the job inĀ August 1958,Ā Paul tells how he was approached by one of the directors at his first law firm who asked if he liked cricket. As a huge fan, Paul leapt at the chance:
One of the owners met me at the door and asked if I liked cricket – I love it so obviously I said yes.
He then pulled a season ticket out of his pocket and told me he didn’t feel well enough to go on that day, and said I should spend the day watching the cricket.
I accepted so I trotted on down to the cricket, blissfully unaware of what wasĀ happening back at the officeĀ when everyone was wondering where I was and why I hadn’t shown up.
The next day, Paul was given a stern telling off before explaining the reasons why he didn’t come into work. He was allowed to keep his job and remained on the path to a long and successful career.
The staff at Astle Paterson will miss Paul a great deal. Martin Astle, Director here at Astle Paterson said:
He’s a super chap, he really is. He will be really missed as will his commentaries on the cricket!
Paul himself told us how fond he is of his time at Astle Paterson:
My time working at Astle Paterson has been my happiest throughout the whole of my professional career.
I will be sorry to leave everybody here and I will miss them all a great deal, but hopefully I can have plenty of things to do in my retirement.
As a retirement gift, Paul and his wife, Ann, have received a season ticket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club for next year.
Rest assured, Paul won’t get any more disciplinaries for going to the cricket!
