Understanding The Consequences Of Separation

The Consequences Of Separation

Deciding to divorce is often not easy, with both emotional and financial costs to consider. Initiating divorce proceedings costs £593, but the final bill – particularly if the separation is acrimonious – can spiral, causing stress and expense to both parties. When children are involved, the decision can be even more difficult, with important issues to consider such as the children’s emotional wellbeing and co-parenting arrangements. In many cases, the potential impact on children discourages couples from separating, even though the fallout of remaining together may be more detrimental in the long-term.

Arranging a divorce need not be the bitter separation that many couples dread. Children’s mental health after divorce is, of course, the priority but, with professional legal advice, the process can be made considerably less confrontational.

How Does Divorce Affect Children?

Parents who are divorcing naturally worry about the wellbeing of their children. However, research proves that, if the process is handled sensitively with expert legal advice, most children enjoy long-term happiness with both parents.

If separation is badly handled, then negative effects of divorce on children are more likely to occur. In this situation, children may experience feelings of confusion, loss, anxiety, or anger. Loss can extend beyond the family unit to include their home, school, or way of life.

However, with a sensitive and caring approach to divorce, this can be avoided.

The Importance Of Co-Parenting After Divorce

Co-parenting – in which each parent shares responsibility for bringing up their children, while not in a relationship with each other – is one of the most important ways of supporting children after a divorce or separation.

Clearly, for co-parenting to work successfully, a strong degree of cooperation between the two parents is necessary. Common strategies to achieve effective co-parenting include:

  • Sharing a vision for the way the children are raised, both immediately and in years to come.
  • Being consistent by backing up your ex-partner, even when you don’t understand their decisions.
  • Keeping the children out of disagreements or conflict.
  • Making the children the centre of the co-parenting arrangement, not yourselves.
  • Planning your timetable to enable both parties to spend an equal amount of time with the children.

Keeping Children’s Lives Normal

Rather than upturning every element of the children’s familiar existence, it’s important to retain as much normality as possible in their lives. This will support them through the change, while minimising negative emotions.

While challenging an acrimonious separation, it’s vital to maintain peace with your ex-partner. Avoid taking sides, especially where the children’s interests are concerned, and strive to put them first on every occasion. They grow up quickly, so it’s important to retain the sense of family life even if you’re no longer living together.

Working with an experienced and empathetic family solicitor will help you to achieve a sense of mutual understanding where the children are concerned and agree boundaries to minimise the chance of conflict or confrontation.
