Why does divorce have its own day?

What is Divorce Day?

Divorce Day is a term used by law firms that describes the time of year when couples are contacting them about divorce most.

The day is traditionally on the first Monday of the year, so the next one is 6th January 2020. Most people have returned to work, the joy of the holiday season is over and tensions may boil over following an intense time for loved ones being together.

Research from divorce support service Amicable shows that more relationships break down in January than any other month, and that on Divorce Day, internet searches about divorce and divorce enquiries peak. 40,500 people will search “divorce” online in January, almost 25% higher than at any other time of the year.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that all marriages will turn sour at the beginning of the year, but it happens to be the time when some partners realise what they do and don’t want. There is a lot of pressure in the holiday season to be the happy, perfect couple, and sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.
