Helen Vorley, of Astle Paterson’s Wills & Probate department discusses why making enquiries about your burial plot now may give you peace of mind.
Helen said, “It appears that approximately one quarter of people in the U.K. are currently choosing a traditional burial – but even with this quite low amount, the cemeteries are finding it difficult to find enough space. As a result, many Councils are finding it difficult to provide burial spaces for their those who would otherwise want them.
It therefore may be best to act now to ensure that you or your loved one has a burial plot.”
Helen continued “In the local area, I understand that Church Gresley Cemetery at York Road, Church Gresley, South Derbyshire is nearly full and there is no additional space on offer. However, Newhall Cemetery, which is adjacent to St John the Evangelist’s Churchyard in Rose Valley (off Meadow Lane), Newhall, Swadlincote have just finished extending their burial ground, so there should be sufficient space for the time being at that Cemetery.
For those who live in Burton upon Trent there are currently an adequate number of available plots at Stapenhill Cemetery which is on Stapenhill Road, Burton upon Trent. However, it is of note that should you not live in Staffordshire but wish to be buried at Stapenhill Cemetery then additional charges may apply.”
Helen concluded “At Astle Paterson we advise our clients to make enquires sooner rather than later with the Cemetery where you wish to be buried, as should you not have purchased your plot at your death then whilst your loves ones may want to carry out your wishes they may face a lack of burial space and potentially extra costs.”
